Tips for your Online Self

online? tired? here are my tips for you!

You can’t teach people everything they need to know. The best you can do is position them where they can find what they need to know when they need to know it.

what to do when you are online (and what you should not do!)

  1. Make sure that you are using trusted websites. If you are looking for one, visit a section of this page titled ‘Websites for your Woes’.
  2. Do not just agree when a website asks for access to your camera, microphone, or computer details. Always make sure that you know it is a trusted website.
  3. When you are doing your work and used information you searched online, remember to cite them. Not only does that let you practice intellectual honesty, but it makes you look professional as well.
  4. Do not click pop-up advertisements as they might lead you to suspicious websites. Always avoid clicking them, and if possible, stay away from the websites that do have malicious pop-up ads.
  5. When talking to someone, remember to match your way of writing with the intent of your message. If it is a formal email, remember to introduce yourself first and use proper honorifics. If it is a casual talk, make sure there will be no miscommunication.
  6. Do not post anything too personal such as your address or contact number, this also means not to give your personal details to someone you just met online. remember that there are some real shady users on the net.
  7. Remember that employers also look at your social media accounts so always be decent with what you post. You can also keep you profile private to make sure that there is no risk.
  8. Do not download from any fishy websites. There are scam websites that will really download an application you desired, but along it is a trojan virus which will gather every information you have and sell it to companies or even be used to blackmail you.
  9. Make sure your passwords are unique and that they are for your eyes only. Use security questions that only you would know the answer to. This will help make sure that no one else can access your account. Additional Tip: for social media sites such as Facebook, there is a feature which lets you track when your account is logged in to using a new device.
  10. Do not just connect to free wi-fi because there is one. Some may be able to see what websites you visit, the details you have inputted, and many other things as long as you are connected to the free wi-fi.
  11. Do check out the next sections if you want reliable websites and reliable apps so that your online experience will be much easier.
  12. Do not enter your credit card number to just anything and make sure you thoroughly read what they are accessing and that your permission will always be needed for any action small or big.
  13. If you are using multiple devices, sync your files using reliable apps so that you will only need to edit one time and everything is accessible no matter what device you use.
  14. Do not agree to meet someone you just met online. Make sure you thoroughly know them, their face, their personality, and everything you would usually know before meeting up with a friend.
  15. If you are searching information online (although books would be more reliable), make sure that the TDL is trusted. TDLs such as .org, .edu, and .gov can be trusted and is recommended.
  16. Do not trust everything you see in the internet, not everything in there is true. Everyone is able to post anything, and fake news is more rampant than ever.
  17. If you can, sign legitimate online petitions that would help save a community, protect your land, or protest against unlawful acts.
  18. Do not just mindlessly accept cookies as this means you are saving your information in that website. This can be considered as a breach of privacy, but lots of websites ask for permission for this.
  19. Do share some more online tips in the comment section if you have some. Helping one another should always be a must.
